As triglyceride (TG) levels rise, the risk of comorbidities and complications increases – particularly of CVD and acute pancreatitis. When TG levels are ≥880 mg/dL (10 mmol/L), the risk of pancreatitis increases exponentially.1-3
Different severities of hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) are classified across a spectrum of elevated triglyceride (TG) levels.2,5-8
In severe HTG (TG level ≥880 mg/dL [10 mmol/L]), acute pancreatitis is the predominant risk for patients.1,3
HTG-associated acute pancreatitis is a medical emergency that may require hospitalisation and, in 5–8% of cases, can be fatal.1,9,10
High TG levels in patients with acute pancreatitis are also associated with a severe course of the disease.11
Preventing the first episode of acute pancreatitis in patients with sHTG is associated with a lower risk of recurrent episodes and of developing chronic pancreatitis.12,13
